Toffee apples for bonfire night 🍎

Traditional Toffee Apples
Makes: 8 apples Prep time: 15 min Cook time: 15 min
Ingredients
• 8 small eating apples (e.g. Granny Smith or Gala)
• 400g caster sugar
• 100ml water
• 1 tsp vinegar (white or malt)
• 4 tbsp golden syrup
• Wooden skewers or lolly sticks
Method
1. 1. Prepare the apples – Wash and dry the apples, then remove any waxy coating. Push a wooden stick firmly into the top of each apple.
2. 2. Get ready – Line a baking tray with parchment or lightly greased foil. Fill a bowl with cold water.
3. 3. Make the toffee – Add sugar and water to a heavy-based pan. Heat gently until the sugar dissolves. Add vinegar and golden syrup, then boil until it reaches 150°C (hard crack stage) or hardens and snaps in cold water.
4. 4. Coat the apples – Remove from heat. Quickly dip and swirl each apple until coated, then place on the lined tray to harden.
5. 5. Cool and serve – Allow to set for about 10–15 minutes before eating.
Rhi’s tip: Roll the freshly coated apples in chopped nuts, crushed biscuits, or edible glitter before they set.
