I remember as a kid when times weren't quite so hard

being off ill from school or as we say in the valleys 'bard'

Lying on the settee

with the flu or a 'bard' belly

watching Words and Pictures or whatever was on telly

A blanket lovingly placed over me

on my forehead a cooling flannel

my Mam and Dad

as remote control

getting up to change the channel

My parents would look after me

such affection they displayed

cheering me up with a comic and obligatory Lucozade

When I wasn't too well they'd give the Doc a shout

hard to believe it these days but he actually came out

The Dr would ask you what was wrong and you'd give him a description

he'd often take your temperature then write you a prescription

Usually for medicine

often red gloopy stuff

humongous was the bottle you had more than enough

Mam or Dad would give it to me

a plastic spoon trying not to waste

then I'd gulp down the Lucozade to try and hide the taste

The medicine a magic potion 'cos it always did the trick

a day or two on that stuff no longer was l sick

Now I am much older and times they can be hard

I often think back to those days as I kid when I was 'bard'.
